The boreal aurora, also known as the Northern Lights, can be seen in several countries in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly in areas close to the Arctic Circle. Here are some of the best places to watch the Northern Lights:
- Norway: The city of Tromsø is one of the best locations to view the aurora due to its location within the Arctic Circle. Other locations include Svalbard and the Lofoten Islands.
- Sweden: Abisko National Park, located in Swedish Lapland, is a well-known spot for viewing the aurora, thanks to its clear skies and minimal light pollution.
- Finland: The Lapland region, particularly places like Rovaniemi and Kakslauttanen, offers excellent opportunities to see the Northern Lights, with glass igloos providing a unique viewing experience.
- Iceland: The areas away from the light pollution of Reykjavik, such as the Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Thingvellir National Park, are popular spots for witnessing the aurora.
- Canada: Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and the province of Alberta (especially Jasper and Banff National Parks) are excellent locations for viewing the Northern Lights.
- Alaska, USA: The city of Fairbanks is one of the best places in the United States to view the aurora. Denali National Park is also a great viewing location.
- Greenland: The clear, dark skies of Kangerlussuaq and other parts of Greenland make it an ideal location for viewing the aurora.
The Northern Lights are most commonly seen between September and April when the nights are longer, and it’s best to travel to areas with minimal light pollution and clear skies for the best viewing opportunities.
